faithinthecity.org – After four weeks of intense community outreach and thanks to the tireless effort of dozens of volunteers, as well as 41 churches across the city, United Workers, as part of the Housing for All Coalition, delivered almost 18,500 petitions to the Baltimore City Board of Elections yesterday. To get the creation of an affordable housing trust fund on the ballot for November, the Board of Elections must certify 10,000 of these petitions by August 29th. While this is only the first step in the process to create a trust fund, we are optimistic that the Board of Elections will certify this ballot initiative in response to resounding support for affordable housing.

United Workers joined this effort in response to the need for fair development that prioritizes the human right to housing in the midst of a city that continues to prioritize the same old failed development of investing public resources into private corporations. Rejecting the city’s approach that values profit over people, United Workers is calling on Baltimore City to channel public resources into a 20/20 vision for truly and permanently affordable housing. This vision calls for the public investment of $20 million dollars annually for greening and deconstruction and $20 million annually for community-controlled housing development through proven models such as community land trusts.

Thank you to the other organizations across the city, dozens of volunteers and 41 churches that responded to the call! This ballot initiative would not have happened without you!
